Double Stars

Guest Speaker

Thursday, 17th October 2019 (19:45 - 22:00)

Venue: Concert Room, Swinton Bottom Club

To be presented in the Concert room.

My talk this evening is a basic introduction in Double Stars and the types, ie Binary Optical, Spectroscopic, Eclipsing etc. What the observer can see through the telescope. There is no maths involved.

Speaker: John Cox

John Cox has been interested in Astronomy from a very early age. My speciality is the field of Double Stars, both observing for the beauty and imaging of them since the year 2001 and more recently, measuring them. But all things astronomical are an interest! Married to Melanie since 1992, she also has a partial interest in looking through the telescope!

I have been a member of the Webb Society and American Society of Double Star Observers. In 1995, I joined MSAS until 2002, when I joined DAS as that had now been reformed. I have been a member ever since and as well as being an active observer, both, in my back-garden using an 8” SCT and at our site in Austerfield using the 14” SCT. I also manage the website for Doncaster AS and as such am a Committee member. In 2010, I gave a “Double-Star” talk\presentation to the Northern Ireland AS, just outside of Belfast.

Until 2017, I worked for a Logistics company in Doncaster within the Computer Systems Department when I took “early-retirement”. So giving me more time to spend out in the “wilds”, observing the night sky.
