What Day is it? The Development of our Calendar

Society Meeting

Thursday, 19th January 2017 (19:45 - 22:00)

Venue: swmcmeet

We all enjoy birthdays, anniversaries and holidays where we celebrate the passing of another year.  But what does that mean?  You are 12 months older or you are 365 days older; unless there’s been a leap year and you are 366 days older.  We give little thought to our calendar but there have been times when it was given much thought.

What Day Is It? The Development of our calendar .

This is a look at how our calendar developed into the confusion of months, weeks and days that never seem to add up but has managed to fight off many attempts to simplify.

Speaker: Ed Bothamley

Ed Bothamley has been a member of MSAS for about a year.  He has reignited an interest in astronomy that began one teenage night in the 80s when he wondered why ‘The Plough’ had moved.  He went on to study astrophysics at Manchester University but transferred to mechanical engineering when he realised he didn’t understand Einstein.  After graduating he worked for a local sweet manufacturer and then as a Science Teacher but now works as a sales engineer.
