John Flamsteed (1646–1719) was an English astronomer and the first Astronomer Royal. Appointed by King Charles II, he laid the foundation stone for the Royal Observatory at Greenwich in 1675. Flamsteed spent his life mapping over 3,000 stars, ultimately revolutionising navigation and celestial mapping.
