Solar Tornados
Guest Speaker
Thursday, 21st May 2026 (19:45 - 22:00)
Venue: Meeting Room
Join Suzana Silva for an electrifying journey into the Sun’s dynamic atmosphere in her talk Solar Tornados. These spectacular swirling plasma structures are among the most dramatic and mysterious phenomena in our star’s outer layers.
Suzana will explain how solar tornados form, why they matter for understanding the Sun’s activity, and how they can impact space weather here on Earth. Using stunning observations and cutting-edge research, this talk will reveal the hidden forces that drive our closest star and the incredible motions of its plasma.
Perfect for anyone fascinated by the Sun, space weather, or the incredible physics of our solar system — prepare to see the Sun in a whole new way!

Speaker: Suzana Silva
Dr Suzana Silva is interested in uncovering essential aspects of the solar atmospheric dynamics by identifying the transport barriers and coherent structures such as vortices in the lower solar atmosphere. The investigations are made by means of realistic MHD simulations complemented by the analysis of data from the active and quiet Sun regions.
