Williamina Paton Stevens Fleming never took a photograph of an astronomical object. She probably never took a photograph of anything. She however holds a place in the annals of Astronomy and Astrophotography for her discovery of one of the most photographed and recognisably astronomical object and of a new type of star
So, let’s relate how a single mother from Dundee abandoned by her husband in Boston USA with no scientific training became one of the Worlds most renowned astronomers.

Speaker: Roy Gunson
Born 1950. Retired in 2011 after 32 years at Sheffield Hallam University, prior working in various Research Associations. Been an amateur astronomer since age 10 or so. Interested in History, a recreational wargamer and an interest in genealogy and history. Have been giving talks on Astronomy and associated historical topics since retirement. Currently Programme Co-ordinator of Mexborough & Swinton Astronomical Society.
