Galaxy Formation

Guest Speaker

Thursday, 26th September 2024 (19:45 - 22:00)

Venue: Meeting Room

Steven will discuss early observations of galaxies and early astronomers, trying to understand how they form. A walk through the Hubble sequence, classify galaxy types and show where common objects we can observe with low-power telescopes sit compared to the rest of the universe. This also allows us to ask the question of ‘how special is the Milky Way’. Then, he will briefly introduce some simulations where we test our theories of dark matter and cosmology. How new results from JWST observing the most distant/earliest galaxies and how these results are still challenging our full understanding of how galaxies form.
