Chasing Shadows: Gary's Adventures at the 2024 Solar Eclipse in Mexico and Future Eclipses

Guest Speaker

Thursday, 19th September 2024 (19:45 - 22:00)

Venue: Meeting Room

Gary is an ex-member of MSAS and will provide a rich narrative of his adventures during the 2024 solar eclipse in Mexico, offering a blend of personal stories, scientific observations, and stunning visuals. By previewing the 2026 and 2027 solar eclipses, Gary will inspire fellow astronomy enthusiasts and the general public to appreciate the wonder of these celestial events and the meticulous preparation required to witness them. His journey exemplifies the dedication and passion of eclipse chasers and the profound impact of these experiences on our understanding of the cosmos.

Speaker: Gary Gawthrope

Gary has been a member of MSAS for over 15 years. His primary interests are in the deep sky and what he terms transient astronomical events. He describes these events as ones where you have to be in the right place at the right time. Such events vary from observing comets and ring plane crossings of Saturn to eclipses (solar and lunar) and the transit of Venus. Gary was heavily involved in the building of the new dome on the observatory and is a keen astro-technician, often to be found talking about equipment with newer members.
