Cycling the Solar System Again!
Society Meeting
Thursday, 14th December 2023 (19:45 - 22:00)
Venue: The J.A. Jones Hoober Observatory
Cycling the Solar System in the UK is a unique and educational experience that allows participants to explore a scaled-down model of our solar system. The project aims to provide a tangible sense of the vast distances and relative sizes of celestial objects by placing scale models along cycling routes throughout the country.
The concept behind Cycling the Solar System involves representing the Sun, planets, and other celestial bodies using scaled-down models that are accurately spaced apart. Starting with the Sun as the central point, each planet is placed at a specific distance from the Sun based on the scale chosen for the model. For example, if a scale of 1:15 million is used, the model would place the Earth 15 million times closer to the Sun than its actual distance.

Speaker: Kris Hudson-Lee
As for my biography:
Kris has been a member of the society on and off since he was just 10 years old, first joining in 1983. In his time as a member he has given many talks about many subjects however his main interest has always been the outer solar system.
He holds degree level qualifications in astrophysics with mechanics.
When he's not stuck with his eye at the eyepiece he is also a semi professional bass guitarist, playing in three bands and touring all over the country; although in previous bands he has played all over Europe and even the USA.
