Frankenscope reborn – the story of the discovery and restoration during Covid of a 7” Victorian telescope found in a dilapidated outhouse at a school near Bath.

Speaker: Simon Holbeche

Simon (“Whole Beach”) Holbeche has been an amateur astronomer since he was 9 years old and his family moved to the relative darkness of the Surrey Hills. At the age of 14 he was helping to run the Halley’s Comet public outreach with Guildford Astronomical Society. He became an aeronautical engineer working on aircraft flight computers after advice from a professional astronomer that the age of ground-based astronomy was dead. Turns out that the Prof was wrong. Having moved to the West Country, Simon kicked-off the rebirth of Bath Astronomers in 2019 and is now Chair and runs its outreach with schools, young peoples’ groups and the Herschel Museum of Astronomy.
