This evening’s event will commence at the normal time of 19:45 hrs with notices, gallery, and chat. Our guest speaker Chat Hull who is based in Chile will start his talk at 20:45 hrs BST. Hence the reversal of the contents of the event.

ALMA is the world's largest radio telescope. Situated high in the Chajnantor Plateau in the beautiful Atacama Desert in northern Chile, it observes light from far-infrared to millimeter (and soon to centimeter) wavelengths, allowing us to observe a wide range of phenomena in solar system objects, nearby star-forming regions, and galaxies near the edge of the observable Universe.  I will start by introducing ALMA and the basics of interferometry, and will then highlight a sample of exciting recent ALMA results (including a bit of my own work on magnetic fields in very young forming stars).

Speaker: Chat Hull

Chat hails from Penn Yan, a small village in the picturesque Finger Lakes region of Western NY. He received his B.S. in Physics from the University of Virginia in 2006.

After teaching at the high school level for two years (one year in central Virginia and one year in San Mateo Ixtatán, Guatemala), he attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he received his Ph.D. in Astrophysics in 2014. From 2014-2017 he was a Jansky Fellow of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, based at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian.

Since 2017 he has been a Project Assistant Professor of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, based at ALMA headquarters in Santiago, Chile.
