Maria  Mitchell, born to a Quaker family on the island of Nantucket in 1818, Maria was largely home and self-taught.

She became famous as the discoverer of a comet and became the first female Professor of Astronomy.

The first woman to be elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Speaker: Roy Gunson

Degree in Physics from the University of Bradford, MSc in engineering. Later worked as IT Manager for Sheffield Hallam University at Psalter Lane (Art College) before it was knocked down. After working for over 30 years at Sheffield Hallam University Roy has now settled down to a busier life as "retired". A prolific speaker for Probus, UA3, and WI groups as well as astronomical societies.
